Happiness :)
February 10th, 2008
My son, Chris, is 23. He is a pretty decent sort. That is him in Iraq showing off his 5% body fat. I think he will never get married. His views on some things are frustrating to me, but all in all Marc and I did well. He is ethical, and has a strong sense of character. That makes me happy. He is supporting himself. That makes me happy. He calls home regularly and tells Marc and I that he admires us and we are the best parents ever. That makes me very happy because this is the kid that called 911 to report me for child abuse when he was 12 and I sent him to bed with no dinner.
Chris is in the Air Force. He is a crew chief on F-16s. I don’t exactly know all that this means, other than we have not seen him since Christmas 2006 and he hates Utah.
He was in Iraq a few years ago and scheduled to go back in the next few months. I am good with that. I have a strong faith, and I believe that the safest place to be is directly in the center of the will of God. Being military myself, as well as being married to the Marine, I really don’t have issues with war. If you do, cool. We disagree.
Anyway, so Chris is getting his life in order to head for Iraq and I am not as comfortable with it as usual…so I start praying.
A few nights ago the Boy called.
Hey, Mom. I have some news.
Turns out they have pulled him from Iraq and he is heading for Japan for three years. He is going to be coming home before he goes and dropping his really cool truck off here for his dad to drive.
Three years is a long time. I always wanted to see Japan.

I’m glad they pulled him - but three years is a long time. It’s great he’s coming home first. You know, he looks like you in that picture. Same face.
We owe our lives to people like your son. But the mom in me is cheering that he’s going to Japan instead of Iraq.
Thank God that he does not have to go to Iraq! My son, who is 36, has been in the Air Force for 14 years. He spent 7 of the last 8 years in England, and married a wonderful woman from Plymouth, England. Before that, he was in Guam for 2 years. Several years ago before he married Sarah, he was supposed to go to Iraq, but he was single and had custody of his son, who was 6 at the time. His base commander chose not to send him to Iraq. Thank God for that, too.
I am grateful to all the mothers whose sons and daughters do go, but I do not like war and what it does to people. And I am so very glad that my son did not have to go. He is now back in the states, and we spent last summer in a campground about 100 miles from him, trying to catch up on 9 years of him being far away. I know you will be so glad to see your boy.
YAY JAPAN!!!!!! He is such a doll!!!! Glad y’all will get to see him before he goes.
Thanks guys…I suppose there are always volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, earthquakes and, of course, Godzilla to worry about…
Lisa- he works really hard on his looks..DO you remember how he was always primping, worse than Erin? Yeah. That hasn’t changed..but now he has learned to cook something besides brownies.
My experience with my two oldest boys was that they always cared much more about how they looked than their older sister did. He is a good looking man Marye. Each time I click on this blog I am worried my husband will come in and ask why I am looking at a half dressed man. LOL! Too bad he’s going to Japan, I’d love to introduce him to Crystal. Though the way she is so oblivious i think he would have to have his shirt off to get her attention. She can have 4 guys hitting on her at once and be totally clueless.
LOL Ginger..This is one of the pictures he sent me from Iraq..the other was one of him…uh..on the porto-let. Sigh. I thought this was the better one to publish
What a good looking son you have there. Japan for 3 years is going to be an experience of a lifetime for him I’m sure.
My father is retired army and I grew up an Army Brat. I wouldn’t change it for the world. Our country’s best and brightest are in the military and I support them ALWAYS!!
LOL, Marye! Yep! He’s always been adorable.
Hey, save the potty pic to show his kids one day.
Can I send V to Japan with him??? LOL!
I’m not sure Godzilla would be much of a match for him. I mean, sheesh, just look at all those muscles!! My goodness…
I know three years is a long time, but didn’t 23 go by kind of quick (in a weird, time-warpish kind of way?) And just think of the lovely silk kimonos he can bring back for you.
Great news (and a heartwarming story for a cold wintry night!). Plus, I really love Japan. My family has lived there off and on since I was 9 years old and if I could move there, I would.
Three years seems long now but I’m sure it will just whizz by!
Hmmm… the Port-o-let would have been… uh… interesting.
Seriously, what a wonderful kid, not to mention a total hottie. I’m 36, but all I could think was that he is one FINE specimen! hee! (I’m such a geek, aren’t I?)
In any case, I salute BOTH of you. All my thanks to the Mama and her Son who are protecting our country and giving unselfishly of themselves.
Hey, he looks like he could fend off Godzilla. It will be a long time, but you know, like the rest of us Moms, 3 years is gone in a flash. I’m wondering where 14 went, myself.
I just realized the average reaction on your son’s pic. Um, Marye, you better break out the baseball bat or something else, like..NOW.
It isn’t Godzilla you have to worry about!
LOL!
He is easy on the eyes. All of my kids are.
You and Marc make gorgeous babies.
